If Canadians could vote in the US elections, how would they vote? A recent Yougov investigation notes that most of the Liberals in Canada would vote in accordance with American Democrats while the Conservatives in Canada have more mixed feelings about how they would vote.
Less than half (41%) of Canadians say they would vote mainly for Democrats, and only 13% say they would vote mainly for Republicans. The majority of new Democrats (67%) and Liberals (66%) say they would vote mainly for Democrats.
Although conservatives are most likely to say that they would vote mainly for Republicans – 29%say – almost as many conservatives say they would vote mainly for Democrats (22%) or none of the two parties (26%).
Support for Democrats is higher in the context of the American elections of 2024. Most Canadians (57%) say they would have voted for Kamala Harris; Only 18% say they would have voted for Donald Trump.
Liberals and new Democrats align closely in the way they voted in the 2024 US elections: 80% of each group said they would have voted for Harris. The conservatives are divided:, 35% say they would have voted for Harris and 38% say that Trump.
Canadians cannot vote in the American elections now and the prospect of this change seems distant: 84%of Canadians strongly (78%) or somewhat (6%) oppose their country which is part of the American opposition among Canadians is up 7 points from the January.
Canadians who support Canada joining in the United States are more likely to say that it would vote mainly for Republicans (47%), against 18% who say they would vote mainly for Democrats. Among those who oppose Canada to join the United States, 47% say they would vote mainly for Democrats and 9% say they would vote mainly for Republicans.

Methodology: This article includes the results of an online survey conducted from March 27 to April 2, 2025 in 993 Canadian adults. Respondents were selected from the Opt-in yougov panel to be representative of adult Canadians. The sample has been weighted according to sex, age, education, regional and federal electoral vote 2021. The demographic weighting objectives come from the 2021 Canadian census. The margin of error for the overall sample is around 3%.
