Even though the machine was outdated and the protest didn’t replicate real-world conditions, the stunt focused national attention on an electoral crisis that has been brewing since the “Hanging Chad” fiasco in the 2000 presidential election. report. In her story on U.S. election security, ProPublica’s Kate Rabinowitz found that many state and local election officials are suffering from a funding crisis. Without the money to maintain and update electronic voting machines, officials have to make do with equipment manufactured in 2008 or earlier. At that time, most of the machines had been recently replaced through the Help America Vote Act of 2002, but few have been updated since. By isolating the machines from the internet and keeping them in secure locations, authorities are able to reduce the threat of widespread hacking, but the machines face more mundane technical issues that states have been slow to address and that could have major implications for future elections. On the bright side, the omnibus spending bill passed in March 2018 allocated $380 million for state election officials to upgrade their voting infrastructure.
