Rep. Ronny Jackson said former President Donald Trump is “incredibly sharp” after critics sought to highlight his recent gaffes on the campaign trail.
The former president, who is running to win back the White House, used his Truth Social platform on Monday to assert he intentionally mixed President Joe Biden and former president Barack Obamanames in speeches.
Trump has confused Obama and Biden at least seven times in recent months, according to Forbes.
The campaigns for Biden and Florida governor. Ron DeSantis, who is trailing Trump in the race for the Republican nomination, pointed out Trump’s mistakes on social media. Earlier this month, DeSantis’ campaign highlighted a series of Trump’s “confusing moments” in a thread on X, formerly Twitterwriting that this was “the reason why his masters don’t let him debate”.
During an appearance on Fox News On Monday, Jackson, a former White House physician, agreed with the host Sean HannityIn Trump’s assessment, he remained mentally “sharp.”
“There is no decline. Zero,” Hannity said of the 77-year-old former president.
“Sean, he’s incredibly smart,” Jackson replied. “He has a better memory than me, than you. We all know that.”
Jackson had a different view when it came to Biden, who at 81 is the oldest president in U.S. history. Biden’s cognitive decline is “dangerous” and “embarrassing,” Jackson said.
News week contacted Jackson for additional comment via email. The Trump and Biden campaigns were also contacted for comment via email.
In his Truth Social article on Monday, Trump went after DeSantis.
“Every time I sarcastically insert Obama’s name for Biden as an indication that others might actually have very great influence in running our country, Ron DeSanctimonious and his failing campaign apparatus, as well as the ” disinformation machine” of the Democratic radical left, are lashing out that “Trump doesn’t know the name of our president, (TWISTED!) Joe Biden. He must be cognitively impaired.” No, I know both names very well, I never mix them up, and I know they are destroying our country,” Trump wrote.
He also bragged about “ACED” a cognitive test as part of his recent physical exam.
“Biden should take one so we can figure out why he wants open borders, no energy independence, woke military, high inflation, no voter ID, men playing in women’s sports, only cars and electric trucks, an armed DOJ/FBI, and so on. lots of other CRAZY things!!!” Trump added.
Biden’s gaffes and physical stumbles have reinforced concerns that he is too old run for a second term.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted in mid-September found that 77 percent of respondents, including 65 percent of Democrats, said he was too old to be president, while only 39% said Biden was mentally sharp enough for the presidency. In comparison, 56 percent of respondents said Trump was too old to hold the job, while 54 percent said he was mentally strong enough for the presidency.
Meanwhile, an August Associated Press/NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found that most Democrats believe both Biden and Trump are too old for another term, while Republicans There is a tendency to say that Biden is too old, but Trump is not.
