Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris leads former President Donald Trump by a narrow margin of three points, 45 percent to 42 percent, in a tight race for the November 5 U.S. presidential election, according to a new poll Reuters/ Ipsos.
The poll, conducted over three days and concluded on Sunday, shows consistent support for both candidates compared to a similar poll taken a week earlier.
Voter enthusiasm appears notably high, with 78 percent of registered voters saying they are “totally certain” they will vote. That includes 86 percent Democrats and 81 percent Republicans, up slightly from the 2020 presidential election cycle.
Harris joined the presidential race in July after President Joe Biden withdrew his re-election bid following a lackluster debate. While Trump maintained an advantage with voters on the economy, Harris gained support for her positions on health care and dealing with political extremism.
The poll shows Harris leading Trump by 5 points on countering extremism (43 percent to 38 percent) and by 14 points on health care policy. Meanwhile, Trump holds a 5-point advantage on economic issues, an area that voters have identified as the top national priority.
With the race so close, efforts to ensure voter turnout in crucial battleground states are expected to play a decisive role in determining the winner as the candidates remain neck and neck in key states. Only 46 percent of voters in the poll had a favorable opinion of Harris, while 42 percent said the same of Trump.
The poll surveyed 938 American adults nationwide, including 807 registered voters. Among likely voters, Harris holds a 3-point lead over Trump, 47 percent to 44 percent, with a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
