Hunter Biden’s legal team was at the White House days before he defied a congressional subpoena, raising questions about coordination between the two camps, critics said.
Hunter Biden’s white-shoe lawyer Abbe Lowell and Anthony Bernal, a top aide to First Lady Jill Biden, were both at the White House on Dec. 11 in the East Wing, court records show. visitors to the White House.
A diary entry appears to show that Lowell met with Bernal – although the White House insisted the diary entry was linked to a Hanukkah Reception at the White House and that no issues relating to Hunter Biden were discussed.
The reception took place just two days before Hunter Biden defied a House subpoena for a transcribed interview and caused a minor frenzy on Capitol Hill by asserting his innocence during an impromptu press conference.
Biden’s press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, later admitted that President Biden had been “familiar” with what his son had planned to say.
Hunter Biden finally came clean to House investigators Two months later.
A month earlier, Bernal was also subpoenaed by the House Oversight Committee as part of its investigation into President Biden’s mishandling of classified materials.
The committee identified Bernal as someone who accessed classified documents at the Penn Biden Center before they are officially discovered there in November 2022.
Bernal, informally known as first lady Jill Biden’s “work husband,” has become an infamous figure in the White House, where allegations of bullying and sexual harassment have been circulating for years.
The aide – who has been with Jill Biden since 2008 – is widely considered untouchable due to his closeness to the first family.
Potential coordination between Hunter Biden and the White House has long been shrouded in secrecy — but House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.) told the Post that the veil needs to be lifted.
“We have asked the White House to provide information on whether President Biden sought to influence or obstruct our investigation by preventing, discouraging or dissuading his son from complying with subpoenas for a deposition in connection with the impeachment inquiry by the House of Representatives. , but the White House refused to provide any information,” Comer said.
“The White House must provide the public with information about the contents of this meeting to ensure transparency to the American people.”
Jean-Pierre has repeatedly dodged investigations on this subject.
“He is a simple citizen. He is not a member of the White House. He doesn’t work here,” she said in January when asked about President Biden’s role in her son’s legal defense.
