TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) – The largest group of Native Americans in the United States, the Navajo Nation, is asking the White House on Monday to delay a flight to the Moon.
“Peregrine Mission One” is supposed to transport 66 cremated human remains to be buried on the moon. However, the Navajo Nation says this would be an insult to many indigenous cultures, as they believe it disrespects the moon.
Several private companies that provide these lunar burial services pay to participate in this mission.
Officials from NASA, the FAA and the U.S. Departments of Transportation and Commerce met at the White House to discuss the issue Friday.
However, Navajo Nation officials are not hopeful that Monday’s theft will be stopped.
