Lincoln, Neb. (KOLN) – The Secretary of State of the State of Nebraska, Bob Evnen and 20 other Secretaries of State, sent a letter asking the American program of the Department of Internal Security for the improvement of the Systematic Extraterrestrial Verification Program for Rights (SAVE).
The safeguard program allows government agencies to ensure that only American citizens are registered to vote.
In the letter, sent to the Kristi Noem internal security secretary on February 27, the secretaries described five proposed improvements which, according to them, would improve the accuracy and efficiency of the verification process. The suggested improvements are as follows:
- The possibility of looking for several voters at the same time – States must currently enter each person individually for examining the safeguard system to verify citizenship status. The secretaries wrote that by allowing several people to be wanted immediately, states can more effectively identify non-citizens who register or try to register to vote.
- Increase the amount of identification information that users can use to identify individuals – Users must have unique identifiers to seek an individual citizenship status. The secretaries believe that by allowing them to use more unique identifiers that electoral officials already have, this would allow electoral officials to more easily identify the non-citizens who try to register to vote.
- Allowing states to use the economy at no cost – The backup requires both user fees and costs recently increased by research.
- Provide clear advice on how and when the state electoral officials can use the backup system – Some courts have prevented the States from implementing the use of the backup system on the basis of contradictory advice on implementation. The secretaries wrote that a clear definition of the parameters of use and the requirements for implementing the system would allow more states to protect the integrity of the elections without unnecessary interference.
- Inform the states of candidates for naturalization -The secretaries would like to know who marked “yes” on Form N-400 of the USCIS, Part 9, Question 2: “Have you ever registered to vote or voted in federal, state or local elections in the United States?”
“The objective is to ensure that only the voting bulletins deposited by those authorized to vote during our elections are counted,” said Secretary Evnen. “With these improvements, the backup program would be an essential tool used to confirm the citizenship status of those who are registered to vote in Nebraska.”
