Criticism of media coverage of Biden’s low approval ratings and, more specifically, his age, has drawn disapproval from both the
Biden campaign and some
members of the press. Reports about Biden’s age gained even more traction in the press as special adviser Robert Hur
wrote in his recent report, without any prompting, that Biden was “an elderly man with a bad memory.”
Last week, the former editor-in-chief of the New York Times
Margaret Sullivan said she found the coverage of this story, especially at her old haunt at the Times, completely overcooked.
Sullivan wrote that she wants Sulzberger to ask her opinion editor and top news editor to stop “going too far in coverage and comments about Biden’s age” and to “attenuate” it.
“We’re not saying this is the same as Trump’s five court cases or that they are,” Sulzberger said in the interview. “They are different. But both statements are true, and the public needs to know them. And if you exaggerate one side or downplay the other, neither side has reason to trust you in the long run.
