Social media users say White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is rewriting history about the roles of the United States and Ukraine during World War II.
A May 9 Facebook post shared a video of a White House press briefing in which Andrew Feinberg, White House correspondent for The Independent, a British media outlet, appears to ask Jean-Pierre whether the United States does not condemn Nazi symbolism in Ukraine. The video included Russian subtitles.
In response, Jean-Pierre appears to say: “Seventy-nine years ago, the United States and our Ukrainian allies joined forces to fight the oppressive regimes of (Adolf) Hitler and (Joseph) Stalin. While Berlin is now an ally, the threat from the East persists. That is why we are determined to stand by Ukraine and offer it our full support in every possible way. »
The Facebook post’s caption read: “Oh my God, anti-Russian disinformation has gotten so deep that the White House press secretary is rewriting the history of World War II by saying that the United States ( and Ukraine) fought both Hitler and Stalin.”

The audio of the video has been edited. This exchange on the Second World War between the journalist and Jean-Pierre did not take place.
The same video was shared on May 8 on X, where it had been viewed more than 550,000 times as of May 9. It was marked with a community note stating that the audio was fake. The video was also shared on a pro-Russian Telegram channel, Newsweek. reported.
In footage from the real White House from May 7 press conference that the fake video had been altered, Feinberg asked about the White House’s plans to persuade Israel to allow more humanitarian aid to Gaza. Jean-Pierre said President Joe Biden had been in contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about reopening the Kerem Shalom border crossing to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The Second World War, Hilter and Stalin were not mentioned during this press briefing.
During World War II, the United States was allied with the Soviet Union against Nazi Germany. The United States did not fight Ukraine, which was occupied by German forces during most of the war. Ukraine returned to Soviet control in 1944.
We evaluate the claim that Jean-Pierre declared that the United States and Ukraine won World War II Pants on Fire!
