Cutting cold weather payments could be a costly mistake if freezing pensioners end up in emergency rooms this winter, a former minister has warned. Labor’s continued cuts to pension benefits mean the £300 winter fuel payment will be taken away from millions of people during the colder months. Previously available to anyone over the state pension age, the payment will now be reduced and given only to those in receipt of Pension Credit or other means-tested benefits. The payment will remain at £200 for those aged 66 to 79 and £300 for those over 80.
