On the lapel of his jacket, Richard Gadd, an Emmy winner for his film “Baby Reindeer,” wore a white pin with black writing that read, “We Are Survivors.” The statement refers to a U.K. charity that helps male-identified abuse survivors.
“I always give them a little nudge,” Gadd told the Guardian last April, adding: “because they’ve helped me so much over the years, and they say breaking the silence is the first step. Sometimes I talk to men who have survived violence, and I’m not a counsellor or a professional, but the first piece of advice is to break the silence. Talk to someone, and if it’s too scary, write it down, turn it into something. Because I think the more you say it, the smaller it becomes.”
