Anthony Scaramucci, who served as White House communications director under former President Trump for a brief period, said in an interview Sunday that he plans to campaign for President Biden if Trump wins the Republican nomination for the presidency. presidential in 2024.
In an interview on “CNN Newsroom” with Jim Acosta, Scaramucci pointed to Trump’s recent threats against his political rivals to emphasize the need to protect American institutions before prioritizing partisan politics.
“This is truly going to be a battle for democracy. It will expand executive power. It’s going to make things harder for people. He has already said he will go after his opponents by calling on the Justice Department,” Scaramucci said of Trump.
“And so, for all of those reasons, we need to help the Democrats here if he ultimately runs,” he continued, referring to Trump. “I’m going to work really hard on this.”
When Acosta tried to clarify whether that meant he would support Biden over Trump, Scarammucci responded, “Well, 100 percent.” No, no, you didn’t hear wrong.
“If Donald Trump is the nominee, I’m a patriot first, Jim, I’m a supporter second. This is a battle for American democracy. This is a battle for freedom. When someone tells you they are going to bend and become a dictator on day one and go after their opponents, that goes against the American experience of over 200 years,” Scaramucci said .
Scaramucci, who became a prominent Trump critic, made history when he served just 10 days as communications director in a Trump administration known for turnover.
“We need to explain to the American people what he is suggesting,” Scaramucci said of Trump. “They may think his policies are going to work and that sort of thing. But we must keep the system in place. We must hire an institutionalist in 2024 and preserve and expand the system of American democracy. Mr. Trump doesn’t want to do that.”
“And so, absolutely, if it’s Trump versus Biden, I will do everything I can to make sure the president stays in office,” he said.
