US President Donald Trump on Monday pardoned more than 1,500 of his supporters who stormed the Capitol on January 6, 2021, in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Trump, just hours after taking office, also ordered that all pending criminal charges against Capitol riot defendants be dropped.
Among those pardoned was Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the far-right Proud Boys party, who was sentenced to 22 years in prison for leading a military-style assault on the Capitol.
Stewart Rhodes, leader of another far-right group, the Oath Keepers, had his 18-year prison sentence commuted to time served. Tarrio and Rhodes had been convicted of seditious conspiracy.

Calling the rioters “hostages,” Trump said at a signing ceremony at the White House that he had issued “full pardons” to more than 1,500 defendants.
