Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Acting U.S. Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe, Jr. got into a heated exchange during a joint Senate committee hearing Tuesday on the response to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump. Trump was nearly assassinated on July 13 while addressing a crowd at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The FBI told reporters Monday morning that Trump’s would-be assassin, Thomas Crooks, gained access to the roof of a building near the rally by climbing on heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment and pipes. Crooks then traversed multiple rooftops before finding his firing position atop a building owned by American Glass Research (AGR), located near the Butler Farm Showgrounds, about 500 feet from where the former president spoke at his rally. The FBI held a telephone press conference with reporters more than two weeks after Crooks, 20, shot Trump with a folding-stock AR-15 DPMS-style firearm during the rally, in an assassination attempt that nicked the president’s ear but left one person dead and two others hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Leaders of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee are making a sweeping request for documents as part of the panel’s investigation into the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The Trump campaign announced the Butler rally on July 3, and three days later, Crooks signed up for the event. That same day, July 6, he researched how close Lee Henry Oswald was to former President John F. Kennedy when Oswald assassinated the former president in 1963. On July 7, he drove to the rally site and spent about 20 minutes in the area, Rojak said. Trump took the podium around 6 p.m., an hour after his scheduled speech. Eleven minutes later, Crooks fired multiple shots, killing Corey Comperatore, 50, and critically wounding David Dutch, 57, and James Copenhaver, 74. Dutch was hospitalized and has since been released, while Copenhaver remains hospitalized. FBI officials are still working to determine Crooks’ motive behind the assassination attempt that rocked Butler and surrounding townships. They are also looking into whether Crooks planned with co-conspirators, though the agency said Monday there was no indication that others were involved. Sens. Gary Peters (D-Michigan) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.) — the committee’s chairman and ranking member, respectively — and Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), who lead a key subcommittee, sent letters Thursday to the Secret Service, the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Intelligence and Analysis, the Beaver County District Attorney, the Butler County District Attorney, the Butler County Sheriff, the Butler Township Police Department and the Pennsylvania State Police.
