President Biden has refused to appear before House investigators, writing in a Monday letter through an attorney that the investigation “is complete.”
Although brief, the letter addresses the impeachment investigation led in part by House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), which has yet to uncover any wrongdoing by the from President Biden.
“Your committee’s so-called ‘impeachment inquiry’ has only succeeded in providing ample evidence that the President did, in fact, do nothing wrong. Yet, rather than acknowledging this reality, your letter of March 28, 2024 contains the same litany of false allegations that have been repeatedly debunked and refuted by the same witnesses you called before your Committee and the numerous documents you obtained. , Richard Sauber, special adviser to the president, wrote in a letter to Comer obtained by The Hill
“Your insistence on peddling these false and unsubstantiated allegations despite ample evidence to the contrary makes one thing clear about your investigation: the facts don’t matter to you. »
CNN was the first to report Sauber’s response.
Contents of Comer’s March letter to President Biden many doubtful claims with the aim of linking the president to the business dealings of various family members.
It also showed that Comer relied on an investigative lead related to President Biden’s work as vice president in Ukraine. Authorities recently arrested a former FBI informant on charges of lying to the bureau by fabricating allegations that Biden took a bribe in connection with his work there.
Sauber further highlighted discussions by Comer and other Republicans to make criminal referrals from their investigation rather than pursue charges through impeachment, noting that the president also initiated the pivot in a collection email of funds.
“As our office has demonstrated, and you acknowledged in a recent fundraising email, your impeachment investigation is complete,” Sauber wrote.
Impeachment has taken a back seat in the House in recent weeks as the chamber prioritizes other deadlines and support has waned within the GOP conference.
GOP colleagues have become more open in recent weeks questioning whether Comer and other investigators have gathered enough evidence to build a case against President Biden.
Democrats, meanwhile, pressed Comer to name a crime that President Biden could be accused of.
The letter comes a day before Comer suggested President Biden testify, although the president has not yet scheduled a hearing.
“In the Biden family, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Like his son, Hunter Biden, President Biden refuses to testify in public about the Bidens’ corrupt influence peddling,” Comer said in a statement, gesturing for Hunter Biden to refuse to appear at a hearing after testifying behind closed doors. closed.
Comer went on to suggest that President Biden was not telling the truth about the extent to which he interacted with his son’s business associates, listing a number of names he wanted to question the president about. The list includes Mykola Zlochevsky, the head of Ukrainian energy company Burimsa and the now-indicted former FBI informant accused of bribing the Biden family.
“It is unfortunate that President Biden is unwilling to answer questions in front of the American people and refuses to answer the very simple and direct questions we included in the invitation. Why is it so difficult for the White House to answer these questions? Comer said.
