Only two political parties have long dominated the American government. The 117th Congress had only two independent members in the Senate, both in groups with Democrats. And it has been more than half a century since a candidate from the Democratic Party or the Republican Party won a single electoral vote in a presidential election. Some experts suggest that the two-party system could be blamed for the political polarization we see in America. More and more Americans are becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the system. A 2022 study found that nearly 4 in 10 Americans would like to have more political parties to choose from. “It’s a two-party system and you have to choose one side or the other,” said Lee Drutman, a senior fellow at New America. “If we are in a situation where one party feels that the other party’s victory would be so disastrous for the country that perhaps we should intervene to prevent the other party from winning, then there is really no longer any of democracy.” So should the United States consider abandoning a two-party system and what kinds of changes would that bring?
