The presidential elections in the United States, in particular the results of the Republican Party primaries, could affect the process of further support from the United States to Ukraine.
John Herbst, former US ambassador to Ukraine and now director of the Eurasia Center at the Atlantic Council in Washington, spoke about this in a statement. interview with Ukrinform.
“I think there is a chance that they (the elections – editor’s note) will have (an influence on support for Ukraine – editor’s note),” the former senior diplomat said when asked whether elections in the United States would affect support for Ukraine.
He said how the situation develops could depend on which Republican Party candidate wins the party race.
“I think what happens in the Republican primaries will have an influence on this question of looking to the future,” the former ambassador said.
For this reason, according to him, it is important to adopt a large-scale aid plan for Ukraine as quickly as possible.
As Ukrinform announced earlier, the US Senate will continue discussions on migration reform in January. Republicans are demanding an agreement on this issue before putting additional aid to Ukraine to a vote.
