Michael Douglas says he believes the president Joe Biden is still “sharp as a tack” – while adding a dig at the former president Donald Trump— due to concerns about both men’s willingness to tackle another four-year presidency continue to swirl.
Appearing on CNN on Sunday to promote his new series, Franklinin which Douglas plays Benjamin Franklin during one of “history’s great diplomatic moments,” according to host Fareed Zakaria, the 79-year-old weighed in on the current state of modern politics.
When asked if he would ever run for president, Douglas scoffed, adding that he had played the role before (in the 1995 Aaron Sorkin-directed film, The American President.) When asked what he thought about Biden’s age — Biden is 81, compared to Douglas’s 79 — Douglas responded to suggestions that the president was not ready for the job.
“I think I walk a little like him,” Douglas said with a smirk.
“And people I’ve talked to and everyone I know says he’s as sharp as a stalker. He is fine. We all have a memory problem. As we get older, we forget names. He overcame a stutter in his life.
“But let’s just say his entire cabinet, including his vice president, everyone in his cabinet would be more than happy to work with him again in the next term. I can’t say the same about the other candidate because no one in his 2016 cabinet wants to get involved with him.”
While admitting that he filmed Franklin in 2022 and after 165 days of filming for seven months he hasn’t worked since, Douglas said that Biden, “everything will be fine, thank you very much.”
Douglas added: “This is probably the most important election of my lifetime. This is the most critical moment of my life. We need someone who is in control, who has power, who has some experience and who knows how to work on a global situation.
Douglas’ appearance on CNN comes just days before a planned fundraiser for the Biden campaign, which the actor and his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones are expected to attend. attend and title.
