Mumbai: Famous Bollywood Actor Ashutosh Rana spoke out on the emergence of deepfake technology and its potential misuse. In a recent interview with India today, Rana expressed concern about the ease with which a person’s face can be artificially inserted into a video using AI technology. Rana revealed that he had been the victim of a deepfake video, in which his face was superimposed on a clip of him reciting a poem that appeared to be a political appeal for votes on behalf of a specific political party. Read on to find more details.
Ashutosh talks about character assassination
Ashutosh expressed his concern over his fake video. The actor added: “Today, your face can be added to any video, and it could even lead to your character being assassinated. And even if that happens one day, I will only be responsible to my wife (Renuka Shahane), my two children, my parents, who are no longer alive, and my guru. Otherwise, I really don’t care. However, I repeat, you have to be careful. It takes years to build an image and just one day to destroy it (sic).
What is the Deepfake video showing?
The video, which featured the BJP emblem, was released in an attempt to mislead viewers into believing that Rana supported the party. The actor highlighted the worrying implications of the technology, saying deepfakes could “even lead to the defamation of your character.” Rana’s comments highlight the growing need for greater awareness and regulation around the use of deepfake technology, as it poses a significant threat to individuals’ privacy, reputations and democratic processes .
Ashutosh Rana on his entry into politics
Discussing a potential political career, Ashutosh revealed: “Usually it happens this way, but for me it’s the other way around. Before I became an abhineta (actor), I was a neta (politician). This is why people think that I will join the sansad (Parliament) soon. But not everyone can be in Parliament, some are on the road, part of the crowd. And I’m one of them. I really feel like if the public is awake, that’s when Parliament shines too (sic).”
Before Ashutosh fell victim to fake videos, several actors like Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh, Katrina Kaif and Rashmika Mandanna took the internet by storm.
