White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre is scheduled to speak to reporters Friday afternoon.
The briefing comes after President Biden drew a clear line in a speech delivered Thursday between his administration’s support for Israel in its war against Hamas, tempered by criticism of the conflict’s high number of civilian casualties, and the violence and illegal acts seen during some campus protests.
“At times like this, there are always those who rush to score political points. But now is not the time for politics. It’s a moment of clarity. So let me be clear… Violent protests are not protected. Peaceful protest is,” Biden said in prepared remarks from the White House.
Biden had made only a passing comment on the protests before Thursday, condemning anti-Semitism but also lashing out at those “who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians.”
Friday’s briefing is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
