White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was asked about Statement from Pope Francis condemning gender theory on Monday, ultimately affirming President Biden’s support for the transgender community.
A journalist pressed Jean-Pierre on the subject of the Pope’s document on Monday, which formally reaffirms and develops the Catholic Church the assertion that attempts to change an individual’s immutable gender are ultimately misguided attempts to play God. Jean-Pierre declined to say what Biden specifically thought about the document, but added that he supports the transgender community.
“We are pleased to see that the document…reinforced the Vatican’s call to ensure that LGBTQ+ people are protected from violence and imprisonment around the world. However, the president will continue to advocate for rights, safety and dignity of the LGBTQ+ community, including transgender people here in the United States,” Jean-Pierre said in response to a reporter who asked for a response to the document.
“What about more specific comments on gender theory and transgender people? » insisted a journalist.

“I’m going to be very careful. The role of the president to advocate for the internal politics of the Church, that’s not his role, so I’m going to be very careful there,” Jean-Pierre said. “But I can speak to the president’s position, and he has always been very clear about the importance of protecting or having protections for the transgender community and the broader LGBTQ+ community, and that has been very clear since the first day of his administration.”
Francis’ statement on Monday, titled “Dignitas Infinita,” addressed more than a dozen individual issues of modern times through the prism of Scripture and Church teaching, including abortionhuman trafficking, poverty, euthanasia, the death penalty and much more.
The Latin document meaning “Infinite Dignity” was published after more than five years of development by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DDF) and focuses on threats to human dignity in the modern world.

“Regarding gender theory, the scientific coherence of which is the subject of much debate among experts, the Church recalls that human life in all its dimensions, both physical and spiritual, is a gift from God,” the document states. “This gift must be accepted with gratitude and put to the service of good. Desiring personal self-determination, as prescribed by gender theory, in addition to this fundamental truth that human life is a gift, amounts to a concession to age- old temptation to make oneself God, entering into competition with the true God of love who is revealed to us in the Gospel.
This is not a new position for the Church… Pope Francisforced to confront the rapid rise of gender ideology in recent years, has already called it “the most dangerous ideological colonization in the world.”
The document continues: “Another important aspect of gender theory is that it intends to deny the greatest possible difference that exists between living beings: sexual difference. This fundamental difference is not only the greatest difference imaginable, but also the most beautiful and powerful difference. In the man-woman couple, this difference achieves the most wonderful reciprocity. It thus becomes the source of this miracle which never ceases to surprise us: the arrival of new human beings in the world.

The document also reaffirms the Church’s teachings on abortion and expands on its long-standing ethical critiques of surrogate pregnancies, for which the pope recently called for a global ban.
